This is one of those questions everyone has probably asked at one point or another. Some people spend years assuming they know the answer, solely based off of how they were raised or how they view the world. But, the fact is there IS an answer you can be certain about, and the answer is: Yes!
I’m living proof that you can be gay and Christian; but there are millions of us out there. I believe we are in some pretty amazing times right now, because more and more gay Christians are coming out of the closet, and more churches are coming to the light, opening their doors to accept all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
There is still plenty of opposition out there from people who refuse to actually study their Bibles, but we’ve come a long way. We’re working hard to continue to spread the news that Jesus loves everybody… yes, I mean everybody!
If this is you, just know that you’re not alone and there are people out there just like you. I know it can be a lot to process. It took me a while to get it sorted out in my head, too. We’ve all grown up hearing that we are going to hell… that being gay is wrong… even that there is no such thing as a gay Christian. A lot of you have been hurt by these so-called Christians, who do nothing but spew hate and call it God’s word. There are probably a few of you who’ve been kicked out of church, or even out of your family because you were gay. I’ve been there, too. Not only was I kicked out of church, but the entire side of my mother’s family doesn’t speak to my sister, cousin, or me because we are gay. In their eyes, we are going to hell; but the sad thing is, they’ve never opened up the Bible to see what it really says.
Please know that there are some really great resources to help you sort through your beliefs and your emotions about being both gay and a Christian. You don’t have to take anyone’s word for it.
One of the things that helped me was understanding exactly what the Bible says and not just what people think it says, or have been taught to believe it says. Let me tell you, I did a lot of studying on my own, and a lot of praying. This is an important subject; and if you’re like me, you don’t take it lightly. It was a matter of life and death spiritually, right? I was fortunate enough to meet some remarkable people along the way that were able to help and offer their support and their knowledge to me in my journey for truth; and I want to do that for you, too.
I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned; but before I get into that, please understand that the answers just don’t happen overnight. Sure, I can answer all of your questions and tell you everything you need or want to know; but until you meditate on it, pray about it, take it all in for yourself, and get it straightened out in your head and in your heart, it’s just words.
On the side bar, I’ve linked you to a couple of really good articles/teachings that tackle the subject of being a gay Christian. It’s exactly what I believe and why I believe it. You will also see the term “clobber passage(s).” That name has been given to those verses people like to use to justify their belief that gays can’t be Christians and that being gay is actually a sin.
Are you ready to dive in? I hope so, and I’m ready to help you in any way I can. I didn’t write these articles; but they were written by my dear friend, Pastor Romell Weekly. I know him very well and know without a shadow of doubt that you can trust and believe what he says. If I didn’t believe it, it wouldn’t be on this site.
I suggest you start with the first one called ”The Bottom Line: Is Homosexuality A Sin or Not?.” It’s basically an overview of what we believe and why. Then move on to the clobber passages. It’s going to take each passage or verse that people use to say that being gay is wrong and tell you what it really says. We can’t just take words off a page and apply it blindly to our lives, right? So, you’re going to see who wrote it, why they wrote what they wrote, and who they were talking to when they said it. If you get stuck or have questions along the way, just remember I’m here to help in any way I can. Take your time with this and make sure you understand it before you go on to the next part. I promise it’s going to help. Don’t forget to pray about it, too. Pray when you go to read and study this stuff. Pray for understanding, and that God will show you the answers that you need and are looking for.
It’s going to be great!
